Zur Buchsheer - Sachsenhausen

Continuing our visits to interesting places to eat and drink around Frankfurt, we returned to Sachsenhausen and sample the applewine and lunch the Zur Buchscheer.

It was a pleasant (but not that sunny) Saturday in March, the tables were set up in the garden, with nice spring blossom on display:

Zur Buchscheer is a very traditional place; although it's in Sachsenhausen, it's in a residential area, well away from the tourist spots near the river Main. It's easy to get to though, very close to the Louisa S-Bahn station and tram stop.

There was a mixed set of customers, with lots of bikes parked outside; it was fairly close to the Frankfurt woods with plenty of cycling paths.

The outside area was mainly open but one side had a kind of lean-to plastic roof installed so very good if showers are forecast. There were also decoration around the walls. This sign means something like
drink applewine every day
to keep the doctor away

The service was friendly but sometimes we had to wait longer than normal for service – there was just one waiter on duty, looking after the inside area as well as the garden; it was, however, well worth the wait.

The Applewine was excellent, we took the standard "Sachsenhäuser Lebenswasser" variety  – weekdays and Saturday afternoons there is a special: a 5er Bembel like the one in the picture (about 1 ½ litres) is yours for €7.

The menu was full of local specialities - we chose the HandkäseSpätzle, with a salad and a portion of Bratkartoffeln. Spätzle is a kind of southern German egg pasta, given a Frankfurt makeover by using Handkäse rather than the usual Emmethaler.

The food was excellent – the meal and applewine were reasonably priced, we had change from €20.

Great place, great value, mainly locals, well off the beaten track and definitely to be recommended.
